RE: Jack White playing “Mother Nature’s Son” at the White House

Ugh. Did you see this? It’s from an event called “Paul McCartney: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song In Performance at the White House”, airing on PBS this Wednesday, July 28. Forget for a moment how strange it is for the United States Library of Congress to go out of its way to honor an aging Liverpudlian (and for American public broadcasting to air the show). What is up with Jack White’s performance of “Mother Nature’s Son”? Feels like he’s trying to honor the delicate White Album classic while simultaneously keeping entirely aloof of the whole “President Obama, Michelle Obama, and Paul McCartney are all staring up at me from the front row” scene. The result is dreadful. I don’t usually go to White seeking softness and subtlety. But I do consider him an authority on how to breathe new life into stale rock traditions. And lately, I’m afraid an over-dalliance with establishment pop outlets (Scorsese’s Shine a Light, guitar god doc It Might Get Loud, that Bond theme with Alicia Keys, and more Rolling Stone cover stories than Hendrix and Cobain combined) is costing White his musical credibility. Just make another White Stripes record already, Jack!

P.S. I’d give anything to know what Obama and Macca were REALLY thinking about during this performance…
