RE: Cee-Lo’s new “F.U.” video

As he has demonstrated through his work with Gnarls Barkley and elsewhere, Cee-Lo Green is a certifiable comedic R&B genius. Therefore, I laughed as much as the next person the first time I saw the video for Green’s new single, “Fuck You”.

But man, I can’t shake a feeling of relief over the fact that I’m not the father of impressionable school-aged children at the moment. If I did, would it be even remotely possible to shield him or her from hearing this Rated-R track? I’m talking a second or third grader here… how is it NOT a certainty that each and every school bus in America is playing an online stream of this song from some rich kid’s iphone? And if you’re an 8 year-old with a developing sense of both potty humor and catchy melody, how are you NOT going to giggle to your friends about it and eventually repeat the curses back to some authority figure?

Of course at the end of the day it’s a parent’s responsibility to contextualize this sort of thing for kids rather than attempt to prohibit it (and it’s definitely strange hear myself talking slippery slopes), but yo, isn’t technology crazy? Growing up in the early 90’s, I can remember hearing “Detachable Penis” a couple of times on a shock jock’s radio show. But that was only because I just happened to be tuned into the right station when it was playing. I didn’t know that an equally asinine video for the song even existed, much less had the one-click power to play it ad nauseum on youtube.

Anyway, this isn’t Cee-Lo’s fault. He’s just doing what he does (if a little broader than usual). But still — and this is an unmarried, underemployed twenty-something male talking here — won’t somebody PLEASE think of the children?
